Librarians promote information literacy by providing timely and targeted instruction aligned with course goals. Faculty can request a librarian to develop and provide in-person instruction and activities. Since information literacy instruction is a collaborative, outcomes-based endeavor, we ask that requests for a library session be made at least two weeks in advance.
Librarians consult the Framework for Information Literacy in regards to the course research assignment to develop appropriate learning objectives for an instruction session. The learning objectives are usually met through the following techniques:
Demonstration of starting points for academic research
Composition of search strings relevant to the information need
Awareness of search filters that limit resources by authority, currency, and other criteria
Hands-on activity with search results
Providing guidelines for source evaluation
Managing sources retrieved
Librarians are also available to collaborate with faculty on the design or redesign of effective, literature-based research assignments.
