History of Preus Library

Directory of Alumni Librarians, Library-Information Professionals and Archivists

Introduction

Luther College and the librarians and staff of Preus Library are proud of our long heritage of alumni who have gone into a variety of library-related fields. The quality of Preus Library’s facilities and services, as well as the experiences provided to students as scholars, interns, and employees, are significant factors in influencing these career choices and successes. For additional information about this heritage, read Why Did These Librarians Succeed? Luther Magazine, vol.2, #4, Fall 1965, and the Head Librarian Profiles.

Preus Students

The Directory produced in conjunction with the Preus 40th anniversary updates and expands the Directory of Luther College Alumni Librarians that was compiled in the fall of 1994 as part of Preus Library’s 25th Anniversary celebration. At that time, 150 living alumni librarians were identified through searches of the college’s alumni database and responses from mailed questionnaires. The 240+ names and information included in this 40th Anniversary Directory are based on current or former job title and/or graduate degree information available in Alumni Office records as of summer 2009.

The In Memoriam section at the end of the Directory lists 19 deceased alumni since publication of the 25th Anniversary version.

The compilers wish to acknowledge and extend deep appreciation to the following for their patience, attention to detail, and interest in this project: Judy Riha, Alumni Records Coordinator; Sherry Alcock, Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Development Services; and Ryan Gjerde, Digital Initiatives Librarian. Compilers: Andi Beckendorf, Elizabeth Kaschins, Jane Kemp, and Rebecca Sullivan.
